Childlessness and Infertility in Europe | 20.09.2023

08.09.2023

Prof. Éva Beaujouan is invited by BiB (Federal Institute for Population Research) to present her latest research on childlessness and infertility in Europe in Wiesbaden.

Abstract: Recently, the proportion on of childless women in the population has begun to stabilise in some European countries, while it is still booming in others. At an individual level, the experience of inferility, the choice not to have children, or a combination of economic or personal circumstances unfavourable to having children, are all reasons for remaining childless. In this presentation, we look at how these different aspects have developed in recent decades, and how they vary across countries. We expect that remaining childless by circumstance is the most frequent reason for not having children. Moreover, in a context of delayed fertility, we expect a growing group of people to be biologically childless, making the study of this phenomenon urgent.
