Registration of the Topic and Supervision
Step 2: Meeting with the Supervisor and Writing of the Exposé
Step 1: Selection of Topic and Supervisor at the Department
Twice per year (March, October), the programme coordinator offers a matchmaking between supervisors and students to assure the ideal allocation of supervisors to student topics. Information about this is sent out in the given months via e-mail.
Once you have received this information, please send the following details within the given timeframe to: master.demography@univie.ac.at
- first abstract of your intended thesis (max. 150 words),
- your main research question,
- names of two preferred supervisors (1st choice, 2nd choice) from the list provided.
Within three weeks, you will be informed if your topic is accepted, and which supervisor will take over the supervision.
These supervisors are currently available for new thesis projects:
Eva Beaujouan | Fertility and family, late fertility, reproduction |
Paola Di Giulio | Demographic Challenges in Health, Ageing, Family and Fertility Trends |
Marcus Hagley | Fertility, Family and Consequences of Population Change |
Endale Kebede | Fertility and education in high-fertility context, Causal impact (on demographic indicators) evaluations |
Marc Luy | Population ageing, life expectancy, healthy life years |
Michaela Potancokova | International migration, internal migration, contribution of migrants to population dynamics, demographic change in migrant populations, human capital and migration |
Sonja Spitzer | Population economics, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, alternative and complementary medicine in Austria (using ASEP data), parental leave (policies), skills, causal inference methods |
Erich Striessnig | Population-environment interactions, population forecasts, population history, assortative mating |
Dilek Yildiz | Characteristics (age, skill, education) of international migrants, Characteristics (age, skill, education) of internal migrants, Identifying predictors of migration flows using machine learning algorithms. |
Step 2: Meeting with the Supervisor and Writing of the Master Thesis Exposé
Once your topic has been accepted by a supervisor, you will have to arrange a meeting with your supervisor to discuss the intended research questions and to sign the form "Notification of Master Thesis Topic and Supervisor".
The topic of the master thesis and the research questions need to be formulated in a way that the master's thesis can be completed within 6 months.
Please find the guidelines for writing an exposé here.
Step 3: Approval of Topic and Supervisor by the SSC
The next step is the submission of the following documents until 7 January 2025 (at latest) to master.demography@univie.ac.at
- exposé
- signed copy of the form "Notification of Master Thesis Topic and Supervisor", signed by you and your supervisor.
- signed copy of the form "Regulations Relating to Good Scientific Practice".
Once the StudiesServiceCentre (SSC) sends the approval of the topic and the supervisor, you can officially start writing your master’s thesis. Currently, according to study law, there is no deadline for submitting the thesis within a specific timeframe, but we strongly recommend sticking to 6 months.
